The laboratory of Dr. Jessica Fortin at Purdue University (Fortin Drug Discovery Lab) has an opening for a PhD Candidate in Basic Medical Sciences with a special focus on Neurodegenerative Drug Discovery. PhD candidate will investigate the anti-fibrillary activity of small molecules via protein assays, cell-based assays, and transgenic rodent model. Our prime target for the optimized small molecules is hyperphosphorylated tau, but opportunities will be available to work with relevant targets for neurodegenerative disease drug discovery. The Fortin Drug Discovery Lab at CVM Purdue University consists of a multidisciplinary research team involving medicinal chemistry, assay development, fluorescence probing, and proof of concept studies. Our research lab is member of the Purdue Institute for Drug Discovery, state-of-the-art facilities that promote the discovery, design and development of new drug candidates, and the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neurosciences, which is structured across four target research areas including 1) Neurotrauma & Neuropathology, 2) Aging & Neurodegeneration, 3) Neuroengineering, 4) Development, Genetic & Neuropharmacology. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills:
Up to four months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques (e.g. via summer research experience) and knowledge of pharmacology and/or pathology; word processing, spreadsheet, database and/or desktop publishing software, presentation software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* DVM candidates will be prioritized (competitive PhD stipends)
* Attention to detail and thoroughness in record keeping
* Demonstrated organizational skills
* Experience with in vitro assays via summer research program
* Experience in molecular biology is advantageous
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
* Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and procedures

* Collaboration with other members in the lab is critical
Description of duties: * Perform research and document project-specific experiments, e.g. evaluating the effect of small molecules in vitro and in vivo.
* Prepare lab reagents.
* Data compilation and analyses of biophysical and biological properties of molecules.
* Assist with PK/PD and proof of concept studies.
* Compile and summarize experiment results for reports and publications.
* Write publications and communicate results in scientific meetings.
