Faculty Position in Stanton Spectrum of Care Clinic/Community Practice
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking passionate teaching veterinarians with exceptional surgical, medical, dental and business skills to practice in the Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic.
Successful candidates for these positions will practice and teach in the new Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care (SOC) Clinic. You will coach students as they take the lead in providing veterinary care to patients and engage with clients from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. In the clinic, our students learn multiple approaches to patient management, including alternative diagnostic and treatment techniques, and a wide range of clinical procedures, in addition to developing practice management and business skills. This new clinic is separate from, but adjacent, to our newly remodeled tertiary care veterinary medical center. It is a stand-alone private practice setting intended to produce outstanding practice-ready veterinarians. Surgery, imaging and all related diagnostics occur in the Frank Stanton SOC Clinic. Fourth-year veterinary students and the community practice team provide primary care services and refer patients, only when needed, to our faculty specialists within the veterinary medical center simulating most small animal general practices.
Our Veterinary Medicine Outreach program will also utilize this clinic as a home base, creating access to care for underserved populations, exposing the students to an even broader client base. This unique clinic environment also creates opportunities for clinicians and students to conduct clinical research that advances the spectrum of care in veterinary medicine.
Successful candidates will contribute to clinical skills training at all levels of the curriculum, utilizing our Veterinary Professional and Clinical Skills Center, a new state-of-the-art education and assessment resource, that includes a large open lab, flexible skills labs and communications rooms.
Approximately 70% of Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine graduates enter general private practice, becoming the next generation of leaders in our community and profession. We have full-time employment opportunities for veterinarians to help students develop and refine their clinical and professional skills through the promotion of active experiential learning, individual and team based learning, critical thinking, clinical reasoning and problem solving to influence and excite students to become lifelong learners. The affordability of veterinary care can be a challenge for many clients, and the Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic will meet this challenge head on by training veterinary students to provide a continuum of evidence-based care that takes into account client expectations and financial limitations, preparing students to successfully serve an economically diverse clientele. Our goal is to graduate veterinarians who understand and embrace their role in providing veterinary care across a broad economic continuum involving the entire spectrum of care.
These new veterinarians will be competent and confident on their first day of practice, immediately contributing to the success of their practice and their community.
Founded in 1885, The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is ranked fourth in the nation and includes more than 1,200 faculty, staff and students. To better serve the needs of the more than 70% of students who enter general private practice, and the veterinarians who employ them, the college launched the Building Preeminence in Veterinary General Practice Education to further develop hands-on learning opportunities for students to develop and refine essential clinical and professional skills. Primarily funded by a generous donation from the Stanton Foundation, the program focuses on providing students with hands-on experience to develop the skills needed to be competent and confident spectrum of care veterinarians on their first day of practice. Components of the program include the Clinical and Professional Skills Center, the Stanton Summer Externship Program and the Frank Stanton Veterinary Spectrum of Care Clinic along with experiences in Veterinary Outreach and Shelter Medicine and Surgery.

The Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates are veterinarians who possess a genuine dedication to the educational success of our students coupled with an understanding of the skills necessary to successfully and confidently enter veterinary general practice and practice broadly across the spectrum of care. Candidates must have a proven successful track record as a general practitioner who understands and practices spectrum of care medicine and be able articulate their vision to lead and inspire the General Practice and Canine Health and Wellness program while further developing an environment that promotes student and practice success. Candidates must be outstanding communicators who can create an environment of collaboration and transparency while proactively working with students, faculty and staff colleagues in all departments, alumni, and other constituents and partners, including referring veterinarians.
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years clinical experience in a high-quality small animal primary care practice that is committed to practicing broadly across the spectrum of care. Additional desirable qualities include:
Interest or experience in teaching
Experience practicing in a wide range of socioeconomic areas
MBA or practice management experience
Board certification or examination eligibility in Canine and Feline Practice with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners
Interest in wellness and preventive health care and low?stress patient management
Broad expertise and experience in the diagnosis and management of diseases of dogs and cats, including dentistry and general surgery
