Never before have these issues been so important, and the value of the veterinarian in Government been so prominent. The DCVO role which touches many areas of the Department’s work, including animal and plant health and welfare and international trade, food and farming, and science and research.
Working across a number of areas of Defra Group business and directly supporting our UK Chief Veterinary Officer, you will:
Work to prevent, prepare, detect, respond to and recover from exotic notifiable and zoonotic disease incidents
Lead and promote Defra’s One Health and Global Health security strategy and policy agenda across government and overseas
Help deliver the strategic direction of the department, by facilitating future trade relationships and demonstrating UK animal health and welfare standards
Build effective and productive relationships across government, industry and international partners
Provide advice to Ministers and the department on the veterinary evidence underpinning policy and operational decisions
Champion the use of evidence and science in policy making
Help vets in the Defra group access all the opportunities, skills, knowledge and expertise they need.
This is a rare and impactful role at the heart of one of the world’s leading organisations of its type. It calls for a professional with a good understanding of the role of senior vets – and the use of veterinary evidence – in government. You will need the credibility and experience to operate at a strategic level across a wide range of policy areas and disciplines. On a technical level, we are also looking for a veterinary degree and eligibility for full membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; proven experience of setting strategic direction of veterinary public health; and the ability to clearly communicate complex scientific issues to senior decision-makers, stakeholders and the public.
