Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is a large, PRIVATELY OWNED, 24 hour emergency and specialty center in East Greenwich, RI. We provide referral and emergency services to RI, eastern CT, and southern MA. There is no general practice associated with the hospital. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, laparoscopy, fluoroscopy, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. The staff includes 20 specialists in internal medicine (6), surgery (4), cardiology, radiology, emergency/critical care (2), neurology (2), oncology, ophthalmology, clinical pathology, and avian/exotics, as well as a group of over twenty very experienced emergency clinicians. The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing education. The technicians working in the intensive care unit are capable of managing most nursing cases, including those on mechanical ventilation. There is a well-managed blood bank, and a well-respected rotating internship, emergency/critical care residency, emergency/surgery internship, and surgery residency. The emergency caseload is high, and the cases routinely challenging. OSVS is one of the few large emergency and specialty hospitals that is privately owned. There is no corporate pressure. Rules and guidelines are developed to meet the specific needs of our clients and patients, and the practice ownership is very open to providing whatever support or solutions the doctors and support staff need whenever possible. The fee schedule is designed to provide an excellent living for our staff while being fair and defensible to our clients. There is a generous benefit package. Residents completing this program have a high pass rate for the board examination, and are very well prepared to run a high paced ICU or to work in academia. Due to the high level of medicine practiced here, completion of a rotating internship is an absolute prerequisite to applying for the program, and any applicant must be qualified to obtain a license in the state of Rhode Island. International applicants will be considered only if they have met these qualifications. The compensation and benefits package is generous for a residency program.
