SoBran is seeking a Laboratory Animal Technician to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Building #14BS.
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Laboratory Animal Technician for the NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals.
Description of Duties:
Maintain the sentinel animal program
Maintain accurate and detailed records
Maintain animal health records
Perform prescribed treatments on animals
Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASP’s
Perform or assist investigators to perform technical procedures, these include but are not limited to immunizations, bleeding of experimental animals, harvesting tissues or organs using aseptic techniques, peritoneal lavages, cell counts, food or liquid consumption studies, and splenectomies
Restrain, handle, and manipulate various animal species
Perform daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment to the appropriate person
Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs, and inventories in a timely manner
Maintain surgical equipment
Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment
Perform routine animal care as needed
Understand and follow SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at biohazard containment levels 1 thru 3.
Willingness to work in dedicated biocontainment areas handling various biological or chemical agents. Ability to maintain balance, full range of body motions, and physical agility while wearing required protective equipment, including a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Be familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the work area
Assist in any contract related activity, as assigned by your supervisor, to complete the required work to include assisting with cage wash duties
Have the ability to work weekend, holiday, and after-hours as necessary to meet operational needs of the work site
Always think safety first when performing daily duties
Wear uniforms and appropriate clothing and equipment as identified by the work area and PPE as defined by standard operating procedure (SOP), animal study proposal (ASP), and the Safety Department
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Perform other duties as assigned
Schedule Requirements: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. The weekend/ holiday hours are from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (no more than 8 hours per day). In addition you may be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed.
Required Experience: 2 years of experience in a laboratory animal facility. Must have experience in such specialty areas as rodent, rabbit and non-human primate facilities management and technical procedures, timed matings, barrier management, and data management. Must have a working knowledge of biohazard containment at the ABSL2 level and be willing to work at an ABSL3 level. Must be able to complete an intensive background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI) and pass a security risk assessment through the FBI and Criminal Justice Information Services Division.
Required Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or be currently eligible for the certification and become certified within 6 months of obtaining the position.
