The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 that represents over 89,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services is seeking a Director of Communications to join our Marketing and Communications team located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Under the general direction of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and supervising the activities of three staff members, the Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all internal and external communications, website content and public relations outreach, to consistently articulate the mission of the AVMA. The Director of Communications will oversee the AVMA’s media relations, crisis communications, social media, corporate communications and internal communications functions. This key position will also be responsible for building external relationships to ensure that the AVMA is viewed as the primary source, distributor and channel of information within the Veterinary industry.
A qualified candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, business or a relevant field, with a minimum of 8 years of experience in a communications role. A master’s degree and association experience is a plus. Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) and supervisory skills are essential. We require working experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office, media relations, social media, content development, internal and external communications and crisis communications. A successful candidate must possess a good work ethic; be able to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; and have a willingness to share ideas. The flexibility to work outside of normal business hours and travel on behalf of the Association is required. Approximately 20% travel.
